INTRODUCTION
LASR_MAN prints ASCII text files on a laser or ink jet printer. From 1 to
200 text pages may be printed on a single sheet of paper - the more text
pages, the smaller the text page size. Support is provided for: portrait
and landscape orientation; font sizes of 10, 12, 17, 23 and 33 characters
per inch (cpi); letter, legal, A4, and executive paper size; single side
or duplex printing; normal or book style; books may be folded vertically
or horizontally; binding margins on either edge; and user set page
margins.
Other options include selection of only files that have been changed,
page titles, substitution of spaces for tabs, underlining, covers, a
half-tone "rubber stamp", print font selection, sheet borders, and a
variety of option switches.
Options may be specified as an environment variable, on the command line,
in an option file or by menu selection while LASR_MAN is running. Files
to be printed may be selected in the same manner.
There are four distinct modes of program operation: MENU, COACH, AUTO,
and TUTOR.
LASR_MAN prints only unformatted ASCII files. If you use it to print a
.COM file or a document stored in coded form by a word processor such as
WordPerfect, the output will look strange.
The only control characters that are passed to the printer are carriage
return (13), line feed (10) and form feed (12). The tab character (9) is
converted to spaces. All other control characters (0-31) may either be
printed or replaced by a set character. Normal characters (32-255) are
printed 'as-is'.
THE FOLLOWING PAGES OF THIS HELP SECTION
ARE PART OF THE LASR_MAN TUTOR.
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - PROGRAM SUMMARY
LASR_MAN prints ASCII text files on a laser or ink jet printer. From 1 to
200 text pages may be printed on a single sheet of paper - the more text
pages, the smaller the text page size. Support is provided for: portrait
and landscape orientation; font sizes of 10, 12, 17, 23 and 33 characters
per inch (cpi); letter, legal, A4, and executive paper size; single side
or duplex printing; normal or book style; books may be folded vertically
or horizontally; binding margins on either edge; and user set page
margins.
LASR_MAN is very "feature rich". As such, it has a learning curve. This
TUTOR has been designed to give you a familiarity with the basic program
features, so that you can better spend your time achieving just the right
output that you want, rather than learning by trial and error.
So, spend a few minutes with the TUTOR now, and you will quickly be on
your way!
TO CONTINUE, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - INTRODUCTION TO THE TUTOR
Welcome! You have either selected to run LASR_MAN in TUTOR Mode, or are
new to the program - TUTOR is the default program mode. This TUTOR page
explains its operation and describes the different types of output you
can produce with the TUTOR.
The TUTOR will walk you through nine of the most important LASR_MAN
tasks, and will produce the printed output you select - either a test
document or, if you are evaluating the program, the LASR_MAN
documentation - with pages printed on both sides of each paper sheet.
The available TUTOR output styles include NORMAL - unfolded output, and
BOOK, where each printed sheet is folded after printing to form a BOOK.
We suggest you try the NORMAL test document first, then, if you want,
either the BOOK test or the LASR_MAN documentation. Since the default
TUTOR output is the NORMAL test document, just press [┘] at the next
selection menu to select it.
TO SELECT THE TUTOR OUTPUT, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - TUTOR OPERATION
The following nine LASR_MAN tasks, only two of which are required(*),
will be presented by the TUTOR, one at a time:
1. LANGUAGE 6. PAPER SOURCE
2. CHANGE PRINTER 7. PRINT THE SELECTED FILES*
3. STYLE OF OUTPUT 8. SAVE THE SETUP
4. DATA PATH 9. EXIT THE PROGRAM
5. FILE SELECTION/TAGGING*
For each of these tasks, a TUTOR PAGE, such as this, will be displayed
describing the task. After you press [┘], a TUTOR selection menu will be
presented, asking if you want to perform that task.
If you choose to perform the task, the first HELP PAGE for that task will
be displayed. Press [┘] when you are ready to continue. Next the
selection menu(s) for the task will be displayed, requiring that you
respond to each. You may recall the task HELP PAGE at any time by
pressing [F1].
TO BEGIN YOUR TUTOR SESSION, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - CHANGE LANGUAGE
The LASR_MAN menus, messages, and display text may be presented in the
language of your choice, if a translation of that particular language is
available.
To see what languages are currently available or to change the language
from that currently selected, press the "Yes" highlight letter at the
next selection menu.
>>>>> NOTE OTHER LANGUAGES WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE IF SOME USER HAS
ALREADY PROVIDED TO US A TRANSLATION OF THAT LANGUAGE FROM THE NORMALLY
SUPPLIED ENGLISH.
TO SPECIFY THE LANGUAGE TO USE, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - CHANGE PRINTER
LASR_MAN may be used by any printer that supports the Hewlett-Packard
Printer Control Language (PCL), including these printers & compatibles:
LaserJet +.
LaserJet II.
LaserJet IID/IIP/III/IV.
DeskJet, no additional memory (Soft fonts may NOT be used.).
DeskJet, 256K memory.
The LASR_MAN default printer is the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet
IID/IIP/III/IV or compatible. If this is the type of printer that you
have, and you have not changed the printer to be used by LASR_MAN, just
skip this section - by pressing [┘] at the next selection menu.
To change the printer from that currently selected, press the "Yes"
highlight letter at the next selection menu.
TO SPECIFY THE PRINTER TO USE, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - STYLE OF OUTPUT
The STYLE FILE contains all of the options for a specific STYLE OF
OUTPUT, such as the size paper, number of text page per side, margins,
and other style parameters. The default TUTOR STYLE OF OUTPUT has been
set to 4 pages/side and printing on both sides for the sample output, and
2 pages/side for the documentation.
If you would like to experiment with a different STYLE OF OUTPUT, you
should select the "Yes" highlight letter from the Change STYLE OF OUTPUT
menu.
Even if you do not want to change the STYLE OUTPUT, you can still see the
steps necessary to change STYLE by pressing the "Yes" highlight letter,
and then pressing [┘], or the "Accept" highlight letter, to keep the
currently selected STYLE OF OUTPUT.
To experiment with selecting the STYLE OF OUTPUT, just press the "Yes"
highlight letter at the next selection menu.
TO SPECIFY THE STYLE OF OUTPUT, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - DATA PATH
LASR_MAN may print up to 2048 files at a time, but they must all be
located in the same directory. This DATA directory may be located on any
logical drive that is accessible, including floppy and networked drives.
When LASR_MAN is loaded, the default DATA drive and directory is that on
which LASR_MAN is located.
For this TUTOR session, the files we want to print are located on this
directory, so it SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED.
During normal operation, the DATA PATH can be defined in the option file,
specified on the command line, or selected from the menu.
To experiment with changing the DATA PATH, just press the "Yes" highlight
letter at the next selection menu.
TO SPECIFY THE DRIVE AND DIRECTORY OF THE DATA FILES, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - FILE SELECTION
Files MUST BE TAGGED before they can be printed. Therefore this is one of
the two tasks that is NOT OPTIONAL - the other is printing the tagged
files!
When the FILES SELECTION/TAG option is selected, a PICK LIST of files
from the selected drive/directory is displayed.
The files displayed in this PICK LIST depend on the optional FILE MASK
definition. For the purposes of this TUTOR, the FILE MASK is set for the
single file of interest. Normally the FILE MASK will let all of the
directory files be displayed.
You MUST choose to SELECT/TAG FILES at the next selection menu, by
pressing the "Yes" highlight letter or [┘].
TO SELECT THE FILES TO PRINT, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - PAPER SOURCE
Depending on the printer that you are using, there may be more than one
source from which paper can be fed. Additionally, if the printer is
capable of printing on both sides of the paper sheet without operator
intervention - known as DUPLEX printing - this is where you can specify
the use of that feature.
The available PAPER SOURCES include:
DUPLEX..... Printer that prints both sides of a sheet in one pass.
EPSON...... Front Paper Cassette of most compatibles.
LOWER...... Lower Paper Cassette.
FRONT...... Front Paper Cassette.
TRAY....... Multi-Purpose Tray.
DESKJET.... Tray (Only option available for DeskJet printers).
The currently selected PAPER SOURCE will be shown on the PRINT MENU on
the next screen. To change it, just press the "Yes" highlight letter at
the next selection menu.
TO SELECT THE DESIRED PAPER SOURCE, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - PRINT THESE SELECTED FILES
Printing, the second required LASR_MAN task, is the purpose of program!
Once all of the LASR_MAN options are set and the desired files have been
selected and tagged, printing can commence.
This is done in one or two passes through the printer, depending on
whether two-sided printing has been specified, and the paper source.
The PRINTING selection menu allows you to control printing on a sheet,
file or job basis.
The default PRINTING option is to print all of the files on the first
side and then, if necessary, refeed these printed sheets for printing on
the other side.
TO PRINT THE SELECTED FILES, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - SAVE THE PROGRAM SETUP
LASR_MAN SETUP information, those features that can be changed by the
SETUP function menu and several others such as PAPER SOURCE, may be saved
for use by LASR_MAN with this option. Each time LASR_MAN is run, this
same SETUP information will be reloaded.
During TUTOR operation the SETUP parameters that can be changed include:
PRINTER
PAPER SOURCE
You have changed one or more of these SETUP OPTIONS, or you would not see
this TUTOR page.
If you would like to save this changed program SETUP as your new default,
just press the "Yes" highlight letter at the next selection menu.
TO SAVE THE PROGRAM SETUP, PRESS [─┘].
LASR_MAN TUTOR MODE - EXIT PROGRAM

PRINTER
LASR_MAN supports both Hewlett-Packard LaserJet and DeskJet printers.
LaserJet support is denoted on this menu by "LJet" and DeskJet by "DJet".
This support extends to any printer that uses the Printer Control
Language (PCL), Level 4 or higher.
A variety of LASR_MAN parameters are affected by the choice of printers.
These include PAPER SIZE, PAPER SOURCE and PRINT FONT TO USE, both for
the individual fonts and globally.
The print fonts available for the various printer selections include:
LaserJet +....... Internal and Type 1 soft fonts - a 192 character soft
font set (ASCII 32-127 and 160-255), in both portrait
and landscape, is required by some of the early
LaserJet models and their compatibles. In general, use
Type 1 fonts only if your printer will not work with
Type 2.
LaserJet II...... Internal and Type 2 soft fonts - ASCII characters
32-255, in both portrait and landscape, is required for
LaserJet II and compatibles that cannot rotate a
portrait font to landscape. (HP IID/P can rotate fonts)
LaserJet III/IV.. Internal and Type 2 soft fonts, in portrait mode only,
or LaserJet IID/IIP/III/IV and compatibles. THIS IS THE
NORMAL DEFAULT.
DeskJet, 0K...... Internal fonts only, required for DeskJet, DeskJet +,
and DeskJet 500 and compatibles. These printers,
without additional memory, are not capable of accepting
soft fonts.
DeskJet, 256K.... Internal and soft fonts for DeskJet printers with at
least a 256K memory cartridge, and compatibles.
PRINTER SELECTION
This PRINTER selection function will not change these LASR_MAN parameters
until a different printer is selected. At that time, all of the affected
parameters are set to their default values.

DEFAULT PRINT FONTS TO USE
The default PRINTER FONTS used for the five possible output pitches may
be selected by use of this option.
Most laser/ink jet printers have internal 10/12/16 cpi fonts (although
they may not be able to print these three fonts in both Portrait and
Landscape). Use of the internal fonts, or those from a cartridge, will
produce higher print speeds than using the soft fonts, due to the
required soft font download time.
-> To CHANGE the DEFAULT FONT TYPE for an OUTPUT PITCH, press its
highlighted letter or move the highlight bar to the desired PITCH and
press [┘]. A menu of AVAILABLE FONT TYPEFACES, in alphabetic order, will
be displayed.

its menus and text in English. When the LANGUAGE option is selected, a
task menu with three options is displayed.
The CHANGE option allows selection of a different LANGUAGE file for
display of menus and text.
The NEW option creates a named LANGUAGE file, based on the English
LANGUAGE file. This file contains two text strings for each parameter;
one comment string in English, and the other for translation into the
target language.
The UPDATE option, normally not needed since updates are automatic, will
apply the current UPDATE LANGUAGE file to any other LANGUAGE file.
-> To select the desired TASK, press the highlighted letter of the

The program has the ability to generate a new LANGUAGE file from the
ENGLISH LANGUAGE file. This file will have two records for each
parameter: the first, a comment line showing the English version, and the
second with the English text for translation. Generating a NEW LANGUAGE
file does not do any translation; it only generates the necessary file on
which the translation can then be done.

character field for the LANGUAGE name is displayed. Enter and edit the
files name using the edit action keys shown on the bottom help line.

As changes are made to the program, changes may also be necessary to the
associated LANGUAGE files. LANGUAGE FILE UPDATES, if present, are
automatically made to all current LANGUAGE files when the program is
loaded. They are also made to a file named "UPDATE", which contains a
list of all text changes since the last major release.
If a LANGUAGE file is added to the system that has not been updated, it
may be brought up to the current level with this task.
-> To UPDATE a LANGUAGE, press the highlighted letter of the desired
LANGUAGE or move the highlight bar to it and press [┘]. If the selected

EJECT SKIPPED SHEET(S) FROM PRINTER?

either eject the unprinted output sheet from the printer or having no
printer action occur.
For example, if only one sheet to be printed, and the input tray contains
the sheet to be printed, then the option NOT TO EJECT sheets should be
selected.
However, if the output from the first pass printing has been placed in
the input tray, and it is desired to print only the third sheet, the
option to EJECT sheets should be selected.
-> To specify the proper method to handle sheet skipping, press the
desired highlight letter.
